And The Emmy Goes To……. Black Girl Magic!

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Oh what a night of Black Girl Magic during the 67th annual Emmy Awards last night!!!! While Viola Davis, Regina King and Uzo Aduba won big by snagging several awards, the sisterhood and camaraderie among black actresses was the big win and stole the show!!!

With all of the ratchet t.v and negative stereotypes that are constantly depicted of (particularly) black women in media, it was not only refreshing, it was extremely moving the way in which the premier actresses of Black Hollywood stood out in support of one another. Kerry Washington was literally in tears and  Taraji P. Henson reminded women everywhere of the importance of sisterhood and having a tribe.

There’s nothing like having a girlfriend(s) for genuine support.  Not the kind that pretends to support and be happy for you, but the kind that squeals of excitement at your accomplishments as if it was their own.  You may not talk as often as you like, yet when you do, you pick up right where you left off without skipping a beat.  Ones that pray for you without being ask or who’s mere presence makes the hardest of situations bearable.

When I hear women saying that they don’t have females as friends and only have male friends, I don’t judge but do think; that must suck. I believe that, that’s one lie that many women have brought into which is a manifestation of some serious mistrust issues that probably come from two places.  Either keeping bad company and not using wisdom and discernment in terms of who is allowed into your immediate space or the type of friend that you have (or have not) been, and, well……

Even as adults, we have to follow the advice we often give our children about the choices of friends that we have in our lives.  And, we also have to be mindful of the responsibility that we have of being the kind of sistah/friend that we expect because it’s not always just about us.  “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” Proverbs 3:27

You should feel invigorated, inspired or maybe even liberated after time with your girls; not judged and drained.  Not that it will be all smiles all of the time but, there is a genuine love that exist so if there is misunderstanding, it’s nothing that can’t be worked out. “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”  James 3:18

Many say good girlfriends are hard to find however; if you have them, you know that they are priceless.  I couldn’t be more proud to of how black sisterhood represented on the Emmys.  When the social media trends fades, lets not forget to use this experience as a reminder of what the a true standard of sisterhood looks like.     Spread Love, It’s The BrooKlyn Kisha Way!

This post hits on so many points how we govern our lives. Who our associations are and what that means in our spiritual, professional, families growth. Such important lessons to learn, so rewarding when we do. I learn so much from women like Kisha Adams, they make me challenge myself and I pray that I return the favor with support, encourage and love for all that they endeavor to do. Rock on. #WomenWithSwag

Yes! This read is a reminder, that we can’t successfully walk this life along. We all need a cheering squad along the way.

When women aren’t unable to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, something is terribly wrong. Insecurities… maybe? Past baggage and hurts that they haven’t let go of? What ever the reasons, I continue to pray for women of color in this nation as we face trials unlike any other.

I’ve been blessed with lasting friendships since childhood. I certainly cherish that!

Thank you for this article Kisha!

      You are inspiring!

        Hi Adriane,
It is indeed a blessing to have lasting friendships. Media has played a huge part in promoting negative stereo types and I’m happy to be surrounded by supportive black women

Great article, Kish! It’s important to remind all generations, not just the younger crowd, that we don’t have to fill some media-hyped stereotype. We’re destined to let our magic shine!

Indeed Chaqueeta, this is a great platform to begin some inter generational conversations.

“When I hear women saying that they don’t have females as friends and only have male friends, I don’t judge but do think; that must suck.”

Are we the same person? Because that is my thought EXACTLY! There is nothing that can take the place of that bond between women. You can’t have these shared experiences and unspoken bond with a man no matter how close your are and I hurt for women who shun these relationships with their sisters. Black girl magic was in full effect at the Emmys and I was here for ALL OF IT!

I absolutely loved the how the black women supported each other at The Emmys. Each win felt like a win for all of us. It truly was beautiful. I was grinning from ear to ear (after screaming in delight at each win).

I agree female friendships are very important for women. Good post!
